Urinals
Urinals installed in public toilet areas at motorway service stations should be of the traditional bowl type and must not be waterless, to maintain hygiene standards and user comfort.
Urinals should be installed at a minimum of 700mm centres. Where privacy screens are included between units—a strongly recommended feature for enhancing user dignity—the spacing should be increased to 800mm centres. Reflective materials should be avoided in urinal areas, particularly where they may compromise user privacy.
Standard urinals should have a rim height of 620mm above the finished floor level. In addition, facilities should include:
At least one urinal with a rim height of 380mm to serve children and users of shorter stature
At least one urinal with a 500mm rim height for users with ambulant mobility impairments
Where facilities are wheelchair accessible, a urinal at 380mm rim height must be provided with an extended activity zone of 900mm by 1400mm
For ambulant and wheelchair-accessible urinals, the rim should extend a minimum of 360mm from the wall surface to support effective use. Vertical grab rails must be installed for these units where privacy screens are not fitted, following the guidance in Figure 47 of BS8300-2:2018. Where possible, both privacy dividers and vertical grab rails should be used in tandem to offer all users a consistent level of privacy, safety, and dignity.
As with other toilet facilities, the use of continuous wall panels with rear service corridors is preferred to enable maintenance without interrupting public access. Where rear access is not feasible, an upper access panel should be incorporated to allow servicing of concealed cisterns.
