Activity Spaces
To support ease of use and comfort, dedicated activity spaces must be provided in front of all key fixtures. These zones allow users to comfortably operate each appliance without obstruction and should be designed as follows:
700mm in front of each wash trough
600mm in front of each toilet cubicle
500mm in front of each urinal
These activity zones must remain clear and should not encroach on general circulation routes. Overlapping between activity spaces is not permitted, as this would compromise usability and accessibility.
It is important to note that these measurements apply to standard appliances only. Fixtures designed for wheelchair users or individuals with ambulant mobility impairments may require different spatial allowances.
Urinals are typically shown with a nominal projection of 400mm from the wall, in line with Table 1 of BS6465-2:2017. However, this may vary depending on the product, as some models are designed with a shallower profile.
Overall toilet layouts should follow a logical flow, with washbasins and hand drying units positioned in sequence after the WC. The arrangement of all appliances should be coordinated with circulation zones, and the placement of entrances and exits should support intuitive movement through the space.
